Seeing God in General Housework

There is a
preacher named David Ring who has cerebral palsy. He is hard to
listen to at first because his speech is slurred. As you listen, you
get use to it and hear his message more than his slurred speech. His
message (in my opinion) is that God doesn't make trash. A lot of
people would have discarded David Ring before he was born because of
his health and the inconvenience, but thankfully, not his parents and
not God. God causes all things for good. David Ring preaches for
God's glory and I can do my work for God's glory. God made me the
way I am and has called me to do many things. What are some things
God has called me to do? they may encourage the young
women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible,
pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands,
that the word of God may not be dishonored. -Titus 2:4-5

In general, housework is a series of preparations and work to keep a house clean, organized, and functional. As Christians, our goal is to serve Christ in all we do, including housework. As we serve Christ, we serve our family as well. Prov. 14:1 says, wise woman builds her house, but the foolish tears it down with her own hands. There's no in between. We're either wise or foolish. We're either building up or tearing down. Let's see God in our housework. He is wise and He builds up, never foolishly tearing down. we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. -Ro. 8:28

In John 13:36 Peter asks Jesus where He's going. Jesus answers in John 14:1-3 saying, not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. What? Jesus is preparing a dwelling place? A house for His chosen ones? Yes, He is! What exactly is He doing? How is He preparing the place? We don't have details, but I can imagine Jesus' perfect work in a perfect setting will be beautiful and functional for His children to live, work, and explore for God's glory for an eternity. How wonderful and gracious our Lord is! As a homemaker, I have a great opportunity to be like Jesus. I can prepare a place for Him as He prepares a place for me. The home I live in is His home and I can serve Him by preparing it well.

I don't agree with 100% of what Max Lucado says, but I think he is someone in our day and age who has mastered seeing God in everything. As I read Come Thirsty, I tried to put a star on the side of the page every time he used something in every day life to learn about God. I made many stars! He taught about God by talking about sealed jars, a potbellied pig, a mother bird, the roundworm, snorkeling, and water faucets. This is a guy who must be familiar with I Timothy 4:4-5: everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

I think children are good at seeing more that just an object. They are able to take a box and see a castle for Barbie or a race car to drive when a thousand adults would just see a box. I've seen a simple stick become a sword and a magical wand on the same day. Maybe I can learn from my children and instead of seeing a problem, I will see His divine, sovereign appointment for my life. God is so good and everything He does is for my good!

Psalms 63:1 says, God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I want to be like the Psalmist and earnestly seek God and thirst for Him. This is what C.S. Lewis did in in a Toolshed. Lewis was in his toolshed. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he was probably looking for tools. I know, my brains astound you! He's apparently looking for tools while seeking God at the same time. He gives an amazing illustration about what it's like to look more intently into the things of God by observing sunlight coming through a hole in the roof of the toolshed. A thousand people could have gone into that shed and come out with a tool and nothing more, but not Lewis, at least not this time.
So what about me? What about when I go into the kitchen looking for a pan to cook supper? Could I leave the kitchen with a cooked meal and a beautiful truth I have learned about my Lord? If Lewis could, I can. Not because I'm as godly as Lewis (that'll never happen), but because I have the same Holy Spirit who reveals God's truth to me.

Nancy
Leigh DeMoss wrote A Place of Quiet Rest.
At the end is a page written by Joni Eareckson Tada. She said, everywhere. God is intentional and infuses purpose and
meaning in everything around us. Such communion with God is always
serendipitous and full of surprises. It's a wonderful thing to see
God in everything. Joni is such an encouragement. I hope you
know her story and have read her book, Joni.
I envision her in her wheel chair, painting a beautiful portrait
with the paintbrush held tightly with her teeth, seeing God in
everything, including her diving accident, her beautiful voice, her
paintings, everything.
That's what I
want to do! I'm not an expert and I will make mistakes, but this
will not keep me from trying. I want to see God in everything and I
want to record this adventure for God's glory.

Betsy ten Boom
thanked God for the fleas in her concentration camp in Nazi Germany
long before she found out that the reason the guards would not go in
her area of the camp where they would surely find her treasured Bible
and confiscate it was because they hated the fleas. She knew God was
sovereign even in sending fleas.
Eric Liddell
loved running. He felt that since God made him fast, he honored God
when he ran. He saw God in running.
C.S. Lewis
said, believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has
risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything
else. He used the sun to describe how he sees Christ in
everything.

Every
page of When I Don't Desire God
by John Piper is wonderful, but it was chapter 11 that inspired this
adventure to see God in everything. Chapter 11 is entitled to
Wield the World in the Fight for Joy. While we would never want
to make anything in this world an idol, we would want to use this
world for God's glory. Piper said, did not put us in the
world to ignore it, but to use it wisely. I knew there were
things in this world I simply ignore. I mean, who gives thought to
how fleas, running, or the sun could honor and glorify God? Wait! I
know the answer to this question. Some very godly people, that's
who! Can you name them? I will post them on the next blog.
