Just before the nation of Israel was lead out from bondage
to Egypt, God had Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh. During this exchange of
who had authority over whom, God showed through several plagues that He is God
and the gods of Egypt were false. Each of the plagues that God selected
directly attacked and disproved the powers of what was worshipped in that place
and in that day.
This all sounds antiquated and honestly, it has always seemed
so strange to think that people actually prayed to and worshiped these so
called gods. Even to a backwoods bumpkin like me, this just seems silly. But I
think the Lord has shown me something that helps me understand a bit better.
And to my shock and horror, I see how this is still applicable today. Break out the shofar!
For a while now I have held onto the definition of god as 'one who has
authority over', I guess because I like the ring of it. But what if we replace the word 'god' with one of the
following phrases: 'where I place my hope', 'where I place my trust' or 'where I
place my faith'. For the sake of this
argument, let's replace the word 'god' with the phrase 'where I place my
trust' for now, but come back through this later with the other phrases and check your answers. In this setup we see that I would pray to 'where I place my trust'
looking for a favorable outcome. I would also worship this thing associated
with 'where I place my trust'. Bare with me here.
The ancient Egyptians placed their trust in the Nile river,
in the fertile land, in their livestock, on their priests and magicians, the
moderate weather, in the barley which was one of their main crops, the sun,
their children and in their military strength, to name a few. They created gods to have
something to make offerings or sacrifices to in order to insure their chances
of success and gave these gods the attributes of ones having control over each
trusted thing. They also had priests for each god to handle their affairs with
the gods. And each god had a house or temple or alter where the transactions of
these affairs took place.
It is obvious in the Holy Bible, in the book of exodus,
chapters 7 through 14, where we see that the God of Israel brought judgment on the Egyptians
and their gods, proving these gods to be false to his power and ability. God
called them plagues.
So this begs this question today. Where do you place your
trust? Where do you place your hope? Where do you place your faith?
Health and life insurance? The sheer cost of these have made
them unobtainable for a vast number of Americans, and rarely do they pay off as
promised.
The Stock Market or our great economy? Have you been
watching the news lately?
In other investments, such as your house? Such investments
are honestly only as valuable as what someone will actually
pay you for it.
In your children? Now that depends on your children. If they
have not been raised in a Godly household and/or they have not had the truth of
Almighty God and our Lord Jesus revealed to them, I wouldn't look to them for
much help.
In our super-power government?
In your ability to earn a living or create income?
To which one of these or any other institutions of man will you turn to for help in times of need? What have you sacrificed to these things in
hopes of a better life?
Personally, I believe that the God of heaven and earth is
judging these so called gods of ours today and they are all proving false to
His power. So where do you place your trust? Your hope? Your faith? Maybe it's
time to think about it a little bit closer.
Trust
Joh 12:44 Jesus shouted to the crowds, "If you trust Me, you are trusting not only Me, but also
God who sent Me.
Joh 12:45 For when you see Me,
you are seeing the One who sent Me.
Joh 12:46 I have come as a
light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in Me will
no longer remain in the dark.
Hope
Mat 12:17 This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah
concerning Him:
Mat 12:18 "Look at My Servant, whom I have
chosen. He is My Beloved, who pleases Me. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He
will proclaim justice to the nations.
Mat 12:19 He will not fight or shout or raise His
voice in public.
Mat 12:20 He will not crush the weakest reed or put
out a flickering candle. Finally He will cause justice to be victorious.
Mat 12:21 And His name will be the hope of all the
world."
Faith
Luk 18:8 I tell you, He will
grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will
He find on the earth who have faith?"
