PTM LITERACY FLYOUT INFORMATION

HOW WE CAN ASSIST YOUR CHURCH/MINISTRY OR ORGANIZATIONIN DEVELOPING AN ADULT LITERACY MINISTRY The following provides an overview for becoming involved in Adult Literacy Ministries, which is in collaboration with Literacy and Evangelism International (LEI) USA. We can help potential ministry partners to define needs and develop a viable plan for achieving their literacy ministry goals. If about 50% or more of the adults in a given group cannot read, it means there is a literacy need. There is also an opportunity for church planting, witnessing and strengthening the local congregation.

TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A NEED IN YOUR AREA, ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1.  Is a significant part of the population among whom you minister unable to   read?

2.  Do you find many Christians who cannot read the Bible and therefore are greatly handicapped in Christian growth and witness?

3.  Are you looking for a viable method for witnessing and for Church planting?  If your answer is yes to the above questions, we can assist you in developing an adult literacy ministry.  The steps stated below will give you a quick idea of what is involved in an Literacy and Evangelism International (LEI) adult literacy ministry. Each step is crucial & prepares ground for the activities and parts needed in a literacy program. But, unless all parts are connected in a natural and functional way, the full result will not be seen.  STEP 1.       CONDUCT A SURVEY TO DETERMINE ADULT LITERACY NEEDS, INTERESTS AND AVAILABLE RESOURCES:  The first step towards organizing an adult literacy ministry should be to study what is needed, what is wanted and what is already available in a given area. Anyone who knows his/her congregation fully well are often surprised by the new information a survey uncovers. Such a survey might include questions such as the following for potential students:1. Can you read this Bible verse? (John 3:16 or other familiar scripture)2. What would you like to read about?3. Will you like to write a letter to someone?4. Will you like to learn how to read the Bible?5. When and where could you meet for reading lessons? The next questions are those that need answers before making a commitment to develop an adult literacy ministry. The questions are best answered by a committee representing the group desiring to undertake an adult literacy ministry, rather than by a single individual. (You may want to add additional questions to the survey.)  1.  Is Scripture in print, either Scripture portions, New Testament or a full Bible, in the target language?2.  Have any previous measures been taken to meet local literacy needs? Please briefly describe  the successes/failures.3.  Do you have long-range plans regarding literacy? Briefly describe what you want to happen in the next 3 years. Then answer the following questions about long-range planning: -  What resources (personnel, funding) are available within the mission or church?-  Who could be a fulltime literacy coordinator?-  Who could be the tutor-trainer(s)? Will they be full-time or part-time?-  Who will be the volunteer tutors?-  Who will be the initial students?-  How will the literacy materials be paid for?  Step 2 .      WHAT DOES LITERACY PROGRAM SUITS THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO REACH?We will help you develop a solid literacy ministry of your choice*  (a)     Literacy in the mother tongue:LEI has constructed 6 primers in some of the local languages of Nigeria, contact us and if the local language(s) you minister in, is not available on our list, we will then advice you to make a request. It takes some time to develop a particular primer you request in your language. (a)     Literacy in English Language (ESL) Ministry:Below are the information about LEI materials used for English literacy ministry: 1. FIRM FOUNDATIONS (Basic Literacy): This series is a set of books that are used to teach people how to read and write in English when the learners already speak sufficient English but cannot read or write in English.  They are mainly used in the United States and other English-speaking countries to teach Basic Literacy in English.  2. NATION TO NATION - English as a Second Language (ESL):This is used with people who do not know English. In this case, they need to learn how to speak English as a Second Language (ESL) and also need to learn how to read and write in English.  This book is more recent. These series of materials are prepared so that those who have no prior training or experience tutoring English can successfully communicate needed English skills. Throughout the world, people usually ask English speakers to help them learn conversational English skills, but this is one of God unique tools to prepare His people to engage in global evangelism. Building bridges between many cultures that reside in North America and English speaking countries can only be done through the thousands of local churches committed to reaching everyone with the Good News of Jesus Christ, both Locally & International.  Today, Churches offering basic conversational English skills providence of the most unprecedented opportunities to reach those who have never heard His claims. Using text with Bible content designed for Christians to use, anyone can share God love in the context of an English lesson. See how we can help you develop your literacy ministry below:
  1. We will train volunteers ESL and Literacy Tutors who will teach others how to read and write.
